Potato packaging

Bags for potato packers who need ventilation, light control and shelf presentation at once.

Potatoes have two problems at the same time and they pull in opposite directions. They sweat, so the pack has to breathe. And they green under light, so the pack has to shade them. A clear poly bag solves the second problem and creates the first; open mesh solves the first and leaves the tuber exposed.

Which is why most retail potato programmes end up on a combo bag: a printed film face that shades part of the tuber and carries the brand, with a net window that keeps the air moving and lets the shopper see what they are buying.

What the pack has to do

  • Ventilation so the tubers do not sweat in the pack
  • Enough coverage to keep light off the skin and stop it greening
  • A print face for retail, or none at all for bulk and repacking

Formats we run for potato

Same crop, different trade-offs. What separates them is how much air, how much print area and how gently the pack holds the product.

Retail bags

Header Bags

Potatoes green under light and sweat in plastic. The mesh body handles the air; where a chain asks for more coverage, the poly and mesh combination shields part of the tuber while keeping the pack breathable.

Tube Bags

Potato packers running by weight rather than by count get the most out of a continuous roll: the machine sets the length, so the pack size changes without changing bags.

Combo Bags

The format most retail potato programmes settle on. The film face carries the brand and the cooking guidance; the net window lets the shopper see the tuber and lets the pack breathe so the potatoes do not sweat.

Potato packaging questions

Why do potatoes turn green in the bag?

Light. Exposure to light makes the tuber produce chlorophyll and, with it, solanine. A pack with a printed film face over part of the bag shades the tuber; open mesh does not.

Mesh or poly for potatoes?

Neither alone is ideal. Mesh breathes but does not shade; poly shades but does not breathe. A combo bag gives you both, which is why it is the format most retail potato programmes settle on.

What sizes do potato bags come in?

From 1 lb to 10 lb in combo and header formats; 1 lb to 7 lb in all mesh and tube bags.

Do you supply potato bags on the roll?

Yes. Tube bags arrive as continuous mesh on a roll, so the machine sets the length and the pack size changes without a bag changeover.
